Understanding Protection limited
What the Protection limited status means, how to see which protection is missing and how to fix it.
Updated
Protection limited means you’re connected, but the desktop app can’t confirm every protection for this connection. The app shows Protected only when it has confirmed all four of these:
- Kill switch: on, so traffic is blocked if the VPN drops.
- IPv4 traffic: protected by the VPN.
- IPv6 traffic: protected by the VPN.
- DNS: going through Lura.
If any of these is off, not protected or can’t be confirmed, the status is Protection limited. It doesn’t by itself mean that data has leaked.
See what is limited
- Select the connection status to open Connection details.
- Check the Kill switch, IPv4 traffic, IPv6 traffic and DNS rows.
- Select Connection settings to change what you need.
Common reasons
- VPN Kill Switch is off. Turn it on in Preferences › Connection.
- The protocol has limited protection. OpenVPN connects without a fail-closed kill switch or an IPv6 tunnel. Choose another protocol, or turn on SmartConnect.
Note: Checks that LuraBot or our support team run from our servers can’t verify the VPN tunnel on your device. The status in your app is the one to trust.
